Monday of Holy Week: The Chrism Mass
at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels

Archbishop Gomez blesses the sacred oils used by each parish of the archdiocese for the next year:
  • Oil of the sick is set aside for the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.
  • Oil of catechumens is used to bless catechumens when they begin their journey toward the sacraments in the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, and infants early in the rite of Baptism.
  • Chrism is olive oil, like the others, but mixed with sweet smelling balsam. It is used to consecrate people for God’s service, after a person is baptized, during the sacrament of confirmation, and in the ordination of priests.
When possible, the priests of the archdiocese gather with the archbishop to renew their commitment to service of God’s people.
